  • Post-School Education & Work in Germany Listening Lesson

GCSE German Intermediate Listening Lesson on Post-School Options in Germany I needed a post-education and work listening lesson for my German language students this week. Unfortunately, I am still struggling to find authentic topic-related listening material from other sources. Despite using the sites in the German Listening Websites for GCSE list I put together a couple of years ago! This month, I am working on the ‘post-education and work’ topic in my German GCSE course. I wanted some supplementary listening material to help my students practise their listening skills. So, I wrote a transcript and had a native male speaker record it. In addition, I added some activities. These focus…

Why Learn Languages? Ideas For Students!

Why Study A Language? I have been a language student for over 22 years and a language teacher for over 10 years and I often hear the question: ‘why learn languages?’ In this post, you’ll find some background, the benefits of language learning and a free PowerPoint which outlines why people should learn languages! Why Should People Learn Languages? It always impresses me hearing people speaking a language that is not their native tongue. I currently have a Business English student who speaks Spanish, German and English fluently. He also works as a successful manager at a well-known luxury car manufacturer. In addition, I have an ESOL student who speaks…

Low-Prep & Fun Open Evening Ideas for MFL

10 Fun, Low-Prep MFL Open Evening Ideas Wow future linguists with the FUN ideas and activities below which are extremely low-prep and most of which are very low-cost for MFL Open Evenings I rarely enjoyed taking part in Y4/5/6 open evenings at secondary schools, as I always thought they were a waste of time. This was until one student who came to our school in year 7 said they loved the activities that we had for them when he came to visit the MFL department with his family on a school open day. He also mentioned that he had never tasted the French, German and Spanish foods that we put…

First German Lesson for A Beginner

Teach German With An Awesome First German Lesson for Beginners I am in love with the German language and I absolutely love teaching first German lessons. However, I can kind of see where the quote is coming from. German can definitely be seen as a harsh language. So, in this post, I’d like to give suggestions on how to present the German language as more of a hug, rather than a stab in the back! Enthuse Complete Beginners To Learn German In the past, when I taught German in secondary schools, the first German lesson for a beginner was fairly standard. We started by eliciting the words that students already…

How To Improve Your Speaking with Short Video Clips Short video clips are fantastic prompts for spontaneous speaking practice when it comes to learning any language. “Videos generate visual stimulants that wake up the brain cells and demand focused attention” which can be used to enhance the language learning process. This post on using video clips for spontaneous speaking practice in language learning comes mainly from personal experience. Although “most teachers regard video as useful input” (Warwick University – Video For All). So…read on to see how using short video clips helped me to overcome my fear of spontaneous speaking, and to see some great websites with excellent short video…

Use Emojis To Revise and Learn Vocabulary Last year, I wrote a post entitled Emojis Vocabulary Builder. Students receive a worksheet with chunks of emojis based around different themes. They annotate the sheet to revise vocabulary or develop their bank of vocabulary. Surprisingly, the worksheets were very well received by modern language teachers and students! Thanks to Twitter, I learnt that today, 17th July, is #WorldEmojiDay. At the same time, I also learnt that Apple will be adding a ‘yawn’ emoji – cue favourite, newest, overused emoji! Therefore, I decided to adapt my emoji vocabulary builder activity even further and make it perfect for language learners who want to learn…
