  • Vocab, Speaking and Writing Prompts – ‘Take Your Pick’

Useful Vocabulary, Speaking and Writing Prompts for Language Classrooms As a language teacher, I am always on the look out for interesting activities. Especially speaking and writing prompts. Mainly, because I use them to help my students with vocabulary recall, new vocabulary and develop grammar structures in the language classroom. Where Did The ‘Take Your Pick’ Vocabulary Prompts Come From? Last week, I found this ‘I Spy’ worksheet whilst browsing the web. I felt it was a brilliant starting point for revising vocabulary and learning new words and perfect inspiration for speaking and writing. What Is This Activity Useful For? Whilst it’s not quite the traditional guessing game of ‘I…

  • Fun No Prep Low Prep Games for the MFL Classroom

Fun Games for The MFL Classroom

Fun Language Games for The MFL Classroom To Engage Learners Games are defined as ‘activities that one engages in for amusement or fun’. Nowadays, when learners think of language lessons, they don’t usually synonymy them with the expression fun. So, why not change their thinking? You can do this, fairly simply, by including some low-prep, fun language games for the MFL classroom into your teaching repertoire. Josh Beattie, Assistant Director at the Department for Education stated in 2018 that not enough pupils are taking languages, because “they either consider them boring, dislike their teachers or think they are too difficult.”ย  Although I definitely don’t think that teachers have to have…

Umweltschutz in Deutschland Listening Tasks and Transcript

A Lesson for German Learners on “die Umwelt” I’ve put together another listening activity for German students studying the topic of ‘die Umwelt’, or the environment, entitled: ‘Umweltschutz’. I feel that this listening based lesson is perfect for GCSE German learners, German A Level students, as well as CEF B1 or B2 learners. The environment listening lesson includes the following, which could take anywhere between 60 minutes and 120 minutes to complete, depending on which activities you choose to do: What is included in the “Umwelt” listening lesson? MP3 audio file read by a native male German speaker which lasts just over 2 minutes and 40 seconds If you do…

36 Ingredients for Speaking and Writing To Access Higher Grades GCSE German

Students often ask me, 'Miss, how can I get a higher grade in my GCSE German speaking and writing?' I tell them there are a number of factors to consider, but generally, I tend to guide them to the MFL Progress Ladder, which I wrote about last year. I suggest that in addition to answering the question (!) they should include as many elements as possible from Grade 1- all the way up to their target grade. I advise them to add 2-3 different examples of each element, as far as possible, in any and all of their GCSE German writing and speaking to have more chance of accessing the…

First Lesson After Christmas Break – Top 5 Activities for the Language Classroom

Get the new year off to a fantastic and productive start with my TOP 5 ACTIVITIES FOR THE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM below, which are absolutely perfect to get students in the right frame of mind for learning from the first lesson back, after the well-deserved Christmas break. Despite loving the last couple of weeks of term in December, I seriously used to dread the first week back in January after a wonderful two-week break. Students (and teachers!) seem to be lethargic and it can often be really difficult to get everyone motivated to get back into the swing of learning. So, I’ve put together my TOP 5 ACTIVITIES FOR THE FIRST…

Useful Time Fillers for All Language Classes

Use Time Wisely with These Time Fillers for Every Language Classroom From my experience of teaching French and German GCSE and A Levels, I know there is not a lot of need for time fillers. Mainly, because there is so much content to get through! Nevertheless, I believe the time fillers below would be useful for any language classroom, either as a filler activity, or to use as a teaching activity to practise speaking, listening and writing, as well as revision of vocabulary, and translation skills, for example. 1.
