GCSE German Intermediate Listening Lesson on Post-School Options in Germany
I needed a post-education and work listening lesson for my German language students this week. Unfortunately, I am still struggling to find authentic topic-related listening material from other sources. Despite using the sites in the German Listening Websites for GCSE list I put together a couple of years ago!
This month, I am working on the ‘post-education and work’ topic in my German GCSE course. I wanted some supplementary listening material to help my students practise their listening skills. So, I wrote a transcript and had a native male speaker record it. In addition, I added some activities. These focus on listening comprehension, key topic-related phrases, as well as speaking and writing practice tasks. Making it a no-prep lesson, ready for you to use!
Who is this ‘Post-School Education and Work’ German Listening Lesson Aimed At?
This is an intermediate, no-prep German listening lesson on the topic of ‘post-school education and work options in Germany’. I developed it for CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) A2 or B1 level German language learners. Therefore, it is suitable for intermediate, Scottish Highers or GCSE level German students in year 10 and 11.
I recommend using the listening lesson as an introduction to ‘education and work’ topic for more advanced students. Alternatively, as consolidation and revision on the work and education topic for German GCSE listening and reading examinations. The listening practice lesson lasts between 60-90 minutes, depending on the students using it and how you pitch it.
This German listening practice lesson is ideally a standalone lesson with students working individually to complete the tasks. However, I am sure that they could also work in pairs and small groups if necessary.
What Is Included In The ‘Post-Education and Work Options’ German Listening Lesson?

Will My Students Benefit from this Intermediate German Listening Lesson?
I hope so, for many reasons…!
1. Firstly, the MP3 audio file is read by a German male native speaker, at a medium speed.
2. Secondly, it includes the main elements to cover this German further education and work topic at a challenging, yet manageable level.
3. Thirdly, there is authentic and useful range of vocabulary, tenses, as well as key phrases for the post-education and work options in Germany topic which can be recycled.
4. Finally, the lesson allows for comprehension, topic-related vocabulary and sentence-level practice. It also allows consolidation through speaking and writing practice, where the students can use key-phrases they pick up from the audio.
Whilst this intermediate German lesson has been created with a listening practice focus in mind, it can certainly also be used as work for a cover lesson. Additionally, for reading practice on the topic of studying, work and post-school education options in Germany.
